By signing the Treaty of Aachen, French President Emmanuel Macron and former Chancellor Angela Merkel have expressed their desire to further strengthen Franco-German relations and work towards even deeper cooperation, particularly in the border regions.
The Treaty of Aachen emphasizes the "essential role of the local authorities" of the border regions and other cross-border entities and holds out the prospect of a decisive reduction of existing obstacles (Chapter 4, Article 13).
The explicitly formulated political will to strengthen the border regions opens up new potential for shaping the future.
The Vis-à-Vis special-purpose association is taking the signing of the Treaty of Aachen as an opportunity to take stock of and deepen existing cooperation between the member municipalities. In addition to intensifying cooperation in tourism, the plan is to expand joint activities in the fields of education, culture and sport.
Vis-à-Vis is a cross-border, local special-purpose association based in Erstein. Its members are eight municipalities in Baden (Lahr, Friesenheim, Meißenheim, Ringsheim, Schwanau, Kappel-Grafenhausen, Rust and Kippenheim) and the Alsatian association of municipalities in the canton of Erstein with 28 municipalities. The population of the association area is around 140,000.
